Battle Of I-75 Victory: Bowling Green Beats Toledo Saturday Inside The Doyt

Sat, Oct, 12 | Football

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University football team defeated the University of Toledo, 20-7, on Saturday (Oct. 12) afternoon at Doyt L. Perry Stadium. The Battle of I-75 contest marked the 84th meeting between the two rivals.

The victory is Bowling Green's first over Toledo since 2009. The all-time series is now tied at 40-40-4.

The program celebrated 100 years of BGSU Football on the afternoon, recognizing many individuals who have paved the path for the first century of BGSU Football. Bowling Green's first game was against Toledo on Oct. 3, 1919.

On the first play from scrimmage, quarterback Grant Loy rushed for 56 yards all the way down to the UT 24-yard line. The Falcons ultimately settled for a 32-yard Nate Needham field goal, but the Falcons took a 3-0 lead with 13:04 left in the first quarter. BGSU led for the duration of the game.

Head Coach Scot Loeffler becomes the first BGSU coach since Dave Clawson in 2009 to win his first game against Toledo.

OFFENSE
• Bowling Green posted 425 yards of total offense compared to Toledo's 392 total yards of offense. BGSU ran 62 plays compared to Toledo's 74.
• Bowling Green rushed for 240 yards on 41 carries. BGSU outrushed the Rockets by 108 yards, while the Falcons' 240 rushing yards marked the most for the program since accumulating 275 rushing yards in a 2017 win at Miami.
Grant Loy made his second-career start and accounted for two touchdowns and 322 yards of total offense. Loy completed 14-of-21 passes for 185 yards, and ran the ball 19 times for 137 yards and one score.
• Loy's 137 yards rushing marked the most rushing yards by a BGSU quarterback since Josh Harris ran for 138 yards in a 2002 win at Central Michigan.
Bryson Denley caught a career-high six passes for a career-high 100 yards. Denley's 66-yard touchdown reception from Loy in the first quarter gave the Falcons a 10-0 lead.
Davon Jones added 64 rushing yards on 17 carries, while Denley racked up 27 rushing yards on three touches.
• Jones (4 yards), Julian Ortega-Jones (32 yards) and Quintin Morris (27 yards) each recorded two receptions for the Orange and Brown.

DEFENSE
• Bowling Green's defense held the Rockets to just seven points. The seven points allowed are the fewest points that the Falcons have surrendered against Toledo since a 20-6 win in 1987.
• The ballgame ended with a Jamari Bozeman interception in the end zone. The interception was the fifth of Bozeman's career, and first since the 2016 season.
• On Toledo's first drive of the game, the Rockets moved all the way down the field. Toledo had a first-and-goal at the BGSU four yard line, but the Falcon defense held tough, forcing a turnover as Nico Lautanen recovered a fumble on third down at the BGSU nine yard line.
• Bowling Green made the turnover count, as the Falcons drove 91 yards over seven plays to take a 10-0 lead.
• Lautanen had a career day on the defensive line for the Orange and Brown. The fifth-year senior had a career-high eight tackles to go along with a career-high two sacks. Lautanen had a career-high three tackles for loss.

• Bowling Green's special teams unit made plays all over the field, beginning with a 2-for-2 day on field goal attempts from kicker Nate Needham. Needham gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead with a 32-yard kick in the first quarter, while his 26-yard kick in the third quarter concluded the game's scoring. Needham also went a perfect 2-for-2 on extra point attempts.

As time expired in the second quarter, Konowalski broke through the line of scrimmage and got a hand on the ball, allowing the Falcons to take a 17-7 lead into halftime. The field goal attempt was from 23 yards out.
