In Brief: April 23

‘President Mom’ to premiere at Caryl Crane Youth Theatre

“President Mom,” by Becca Anderson of New York City and Dan Marshall, a native of Sandusky, Ohio, will receive its world premiere production at Caryl Crane Youth Theatre April 29-May 2 in BGSU Firelands College’s McBride Auditorium.

Winner of the fourth annual Ronald M. Ruble New Play Festival, “President Mom” introduces us to Claire McCallister, a typical teenage girl. She is stressed out about her bio exam and even more about finding a date to her high school's spring dance. This would be tough for anyone to handle, but Claire's mother just happens to be The President of the United States. And when President Mom turns the middle school dance in a national security disaster, Claire must choose between the boy she “luvs” and a mouth-breathing son of a senator who might just be the key to world peace. Rated G.

Featuring professional actress and CCYT instructing artist Kelvette Beacham as Madame President,  “President Mom” is directed by Pierre-Jacques Brault and showcases the talents of 18 teenagers from the nine local school districts.

Performances for “President Mom” are at 7:30 p.m. April 29 and 30 and May 2. Tickets for the preview performance on April 29 are $5 and can be purchased at the box office one hour prior to curtain. All tickets for remaining performances of “President Mom” are $10. Tickets may be purchased by calling 419-626-1950, or online.

Camp CCYT offers theatre training for students

Caryl Crane Youth Theatre has announced its newest summer offering: Camp CCYT, where students can explore all aspects of the theatre with other aspiring actors who share their love of the stage. Camp CCYT is the arts camp that is more than a traditional summer camp. Designed for students ages 10-18, the program is a comprehensive, one-week intensive, in which students get a chance to hone their skills in a fast-paced, creative environment.

Camp CCYT meets July 20-24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the McBride Auditorium on the BGSU Firelands campus. The 2015 Camp CCYT production is “Beauty and the Beast.” One public performance of “Beauty and the Beast” is scheduled for 2 pm. July 25.

Camp CCYT is designed to instill in aspiring thespians a deeper understanding about producing and participating in a first-class musical with working professionals.

Each student will not only star onstage in the production, but also will also contribute to the direction, choreography, set, lighting and costume design. Students will be assigned a mentor from the Caryl Crane Youth Theatre 2015 staff and will work as assistants on a specific “behind-the-scenes” area of their interest.

Tuition for Camp CCYT is $125, and space is limited to 30 students. All interested campers must audition for placement. The 2015 placement audition will take place on May 9. For registration packets and to reserve a place in the camp, email carylcraneyouththeatre@gmail.com. Additional audition details will be emailed to all participants. For more information, call Caryl Crane Youth Theatre at 419-372-0732.
