In Brief: June 12

Seize opportunity to support the BGSU family

Family Campaign wraps up June 30 with the end of the fiscal year. This important annual effort is the avenue for faculty, staff and retirees to provide financial support for BGSU students and programs. Many students have been able to continue their education thanks to the support of the BGSU “family.”

This year’s theme is Community + Opportunity = BGSU.

Donations can be directed to student scholarships or to any area or program on campus, and 100 percent of the gift goes to the designated fund. Gifts of any amount are welcome; participation is an important factor in the success of the campaign.

Gifts can be made through payroll deduction, pledge or check.

Donate online or fill out a paper form. For more information, contact Jenny Wensink, director of annual giving, at wensinj@bgsu.edu or 419-372-7702.

Spikes named operations manager for logistics

Troy Spikes, until recently coordinator of facilities in the Office of Residence Life, is now the Logistics Center operations manager. In his new role he is responsible for transitioning to centralized logistics and moving services for the entire campus.

Previously, as the coordinator of facilities, Spikes oversaw facilities services, business operations, and conference and guest services.

Spikes received a bachelor's degree in business and MBA from the University of Findlay. He previously worked in the automotive industry and specialized in logistics and scheduling operations.

Raise your voice with ‘Sing–a-Long-a Sound of Music’

The “hills are alive” at BGSU with “Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music.” The family-friendly audience-participation show begins at 7 p.m. on June 21 in the Thomas B. and Kathleen M. Donnell Theatre in the Wolfe Center for the Arts.

Part of the College of Musical Arts’ Summer Concert Series, “Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music” has been performed over 10,000 times in 11 countries since it debuted at the Prince Charles Cinema in the U.K. in 1999, and has filled the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles seven times.

In 2001, Elton John and 40 of his friends dressed up as nuns to “sing along with Julie,” hiring the show for a private birthday party. Other fans include Hugh Grant, Joan Collins and Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys.

Audience members lend their voices to the experience, singing from memory (or by subtitle, if new to the “Sound of Music” scene), using the props provided to ticketholders.

In preparation for the screening of the classic Julie Andrews movie in full-screen Technicolor, the night will begin with a 30-minute pre-film show during which host Dr. Patrick Pauken, director of the School of Educational Foundations, Leadership and Policy, will lead the audience through a vocal warm-up and prepare them for special moments throughout the film and the fancy dress parade and competition. The audience will choose the winners of prizes awarded in three categories: nuns and children, individuals and groups.

ABC World News Tonight said, "If you’ve always wanted to be a part of a musical, this is your chance!"

Tickets can be purchased by visiting BGSU.edu/Arts or by calling the Arts Box Office at 419-372-8171.

Guests with disabilities in need of special services, assistance, or accommodations to fully participate in this program should contact BGSU at 419-372-2616 or access@bgsu.edu at least five days before the event.
