Options available during Rec Center renovation shutdown

The Student Recreation Center is scheduled to shut down for continued renovation work beginning in April. Sunday (April 6) is the last day of operation for the activity courts, and Cooper Pool remains open through April 13.

Rec Center memberships are always valid at the Perry Field House. Continuing activities housed at the Field House from April 14 through May 9 include Group Exercise classes, a temporary weight room, cardio equipment, Wellness Connection services, and Recreation and Wellness staff offices.

Atomic bomb scholar to give Gary R. Hess Lecture

One of the world’s most prominent and prolific scholars on the decision to use the atomic bomb will visit the University on April 8 as part of the Gary R. Hess Lecture in Policy History.

Dr. Barton Bernstein, professor of history at Stanford University, will present “The Atomic Bombings Reconsidered” from 4-5:30 p.m. in 201 Bowen-Thompson Student Union.

Bernstein is the author of numerous articles on a range of ethical, environmental and strategic issues associated with the decision to drop the nuclear weapon. His publications also include studies on physicists Leo Szilard, Edward Teller and J. Robert Oppenheimer, along with a number of influential essays on U.S. foreign policy and international crises, nuclear history, and modern science and technology policy.

The Hess Lecture is an annual lectureship held at the initiative of Hess’s former students to recognize his contributions to the profession and the University during his 45 years of service.

The lecture is sponsored by the Department of History, College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Cultural and Critical Studies, the School of Earth, Environment and Society, the Department of Philosophy and the Department of Political Science.
