Ohio Supreme Court Justice to Address Honor Society Inductees

BOWLING GREEN, O.—Outstanding Bowling Green State University students will hear from Ohio Supreme Court Justice Judith L. French, when she addresses inductees into five University honor societies on March 15.

French will speak at the 5:15 p.m. joint ceremony in 228 Bowen-Thompson Student Union. Parents and families of the honorees are invited to attend, following individual induction ceremonies taking place throughout the day.

The five honor societies — Alpha Lambda Delta, Golden Key, Mortar Board, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Phi Eta Sigma — will all hold their induction ceremonies on the same day this year. A list of all inductees may be viewed at http://www.bgsu.edu/offices/sa/leadership/page123229.html

“Because all five of the honor societies highly value scholarship, leadership and service, it seemed a natural fit,” said Jacob Clemens, assistant dean of students in the Center for Leadership. “Because some of our students are inducted into multiple honor societies, the groups worked together to make a meaningful experience for both students and their families.”

French became the 155th justice of the Ohio Supreme Court on Jan. 1 this year after being appointed by Governor John Kasich. She had served at the 10th District Court of Appeals, which hears appeals from Franklin County courts and state administrative agencies. She was elected to the appellate court in November 2004 and served until her appointment.

Before becoming a judge, French served as chief legal counsel to Governor Bob Taft. She also served as an assistant attorney general and then chief counsel in the office of Attorney General Betty Montgomery from 1997 to 2002.

She began her state service in 1993 as deputy director for legal affairs at the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. She was also an associate counsel at Steelcase Inc. in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and an associate at the Columbus law firm of Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur, where she practiced environmental law.
