Emeritus status granted to 23 BGSU faculty retiree

BOWLING GREEN, O.—The Bowling Green State University Trustees honored 23 retiring faculty members June 26 by granting them emeritus status.

Heading the list were Drs. Peggy Giordano, sociology, and Gary Hess, history, each a Distinguished Research Professor, and Dr. Milton Hakel, an Ohio Board of Regents Eminent Scholar in psychology. At BGSU since 1964, Hess is among its longest-serving faculty members. Giordano has been at the University since 1974 and Hakel, since 1991.

Also receiving emeritus status were two professors who served in administrative posts at BGSU as well. Dr. Heinz Bulmahn, German, Russian and East Asian languages, was vice provost for research and dean of the Graduate College when he retired last December. He had been at Bowling Green since 2000. Dr. Mark Gromko, biological sciences, was vice provost for academic programs before ending his 31-year BGSU career as interim provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Also named Professor Emeritus by the trustees, and the year each came to the University, were:
• Drs. William Armaline (1999) and Gregg Brownell (1987), both School of Teaching and Learning;
• Dr. Joyce Gromko (1991), music education;
• Dr. David Groves (1979), human movement, sport and leisure studies;
• Dr. Rex Lowe (1970), biological sciences;
• Dr. Gene Poor (1972), visual communication and technology education;
• Dr. Bruce Smith (1970), geography;
• Dr. Richard Wilson (1983), intervention services, and
• Dr. Vernon Wolcott (1962), music performance studies.

The title of Associate Professor Emeritus went to:
• Dr. Stephen Chang (1971), geography;
• Dr. David Chilson (1978), computer science;
• Dr. Kathleen Dixon (1985), philosophy;
• Dr. Norman Eckel (1979), accounting and management information systems;
• Kathleen Hagan (1973), art;
• Dr. Richard Hebein (1969), romance and classical studies;
• Dr. Julie Lengfelder (1981), human movement, sport and leisure studies, and
• Dr. Peterann Siehl (1985), intervention services.

Ronald Harris, mathematics and statistics, was named Instructor Emeritus.
