Students from more than 80 countries are enrolled at the University. International students are an important part of the “Understanding Cultures and Nations” focus of BGSU’s Academic Plan. Their participation is essential to the enrichment of educational opportunities for all BGSU students. International students may apply online at www.bgsu.edu/offices/admissions/choose/apply.html or by contacting the Center for International Programs at the address above for an application. For more information visit the International Programs website at http://international.bgsu.edu/.

For admission purposes, applicants whose native language is not English are required to take an English proficiency test. English Language proficiency may be demonstrated by either taking the official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the official Michigan English Language Art's Battery Test (MELAB). Arrangements to take the TOEFL must be made by the applicant in direct communication with the Educational Testing Service, Box 899, Princeton, NJ 08541, USA. Although the TOEFL is preferred, the University also accepts results of the MELAB. Arrangements to take it must be made by the applicant in direct communication with the Testing and Certification Division, English Language Institute, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48109, USA.

Upon reporting to the University and before registering for classes, all entering international students admitted through the Office of International Programs, except those whose native language is English, are required to take additional English tests. International students transferring from other colleges or universities in the United States as well as students from Puerto Rico are also required to take these tests. On the basis of these tests, the University reserves the right to require enrollment either in ENG 1000 (English as a Foreign Language) or in the special section for international students of GSW 1100 (Intensive Introduction to Academic Writing) and to limit the courses taken for credit.
