Musicology/Composition/Theory

Applicants for the following scholarships must be a music major, have an established BGSU GPA, currently be enrolled full-time (minimum of 12 hours) at BGSU, and be enrolled full-time for the upcoming academic year. The number and amounts are subject to change without notice. You must be enrolled for both fall and spring of the next academic year to be eligible for these awards.

The College of Musical Arts is proud to provide scholarship support for students. These scholarships are provided through the generosity of alumni and friends of BGSU. Awarding of the scholarships is based on a competitive process. The amount awarded reflects the wishes of the donor(s) and is dependent upon current and projected market conditions. Some scholarships will be awarded at the full amount designated by the donor, and some scholarships may not be awarded at all due to current financial conditions.

Richard S. James Memorial Scholarship (one award—$2500)

Dr. Richard James was an associate professor in the Department of Musicology/Composition/Theory at BGSU for 10 years. He was a recognized teacher, researcher and lecturer on 20th-century music. With this scholarship, his family commemorates his commitment to the field of music history and scholarly study in general.

Criteria

  • be a rising junior, senior or graduate student at BGSU in the College of Musical Arts
  • have a minimum GPA of 3.3 for undergraduates, 3.5 for graduates
  • have demonstrated superior skill in written communication as evidenced by a writing sample (course paper, term paper, thesis chapter) attached to the application form
  • be working toward a major or demonstrate a strong interest in music history, world music or ethnomusicology
