The Lois M. Nitschke Memorial Concert

The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra was founded in the 1940s as the national radio orchestra. In the 1970s, the orchestra expanded and became the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Israel Broadcasting Authority. During a most important European tour in 1996, the orchestra gained considerable international acclaim and recognition. As the premiere orchestra in Israel’s capital city, the JSO has been dedicated to presenting masterpieces from the Baroque to the contemporary, often presenting the Israel premieres of these works.

Led by music director Leon Botstein, the JSO made a successful 20-city U.S. tour in February and March 2006. In this return visit to the states, their Bowling Green appearance will include works of Mahler and Bernstein.

Saturday, February 14, 2009

Soprano Danielle de Niese’s career got off to a prodigious start with early operatic deubts at the Netherlands Opera, the Saito Kinen Festival and the Paris Opera. It was her portrayal of Cleopatra in a David McVicar production of Handel’s Giulio Cesare (conducted by William Christie) for her 2005 Glyndebourne Festival debut that brought true international acclaim. Her sweet, gleaming soprano, phenomenal musicality and sharply comic, yet utterly moving acting, combined with youth and physical presence, have brought her to the edge of a spectacular career, capped by the recent signing of an exclusive recording contract with Decca Records.
