A Cappella Choir

The A Cappella Choir is an auditioned, select SATB ensemble of no more than 60 voices, primarily consisting of music majors and minors. A Cappella Choir performs works from throughout music history, performing works a cappella and/or with chamber instruments. The choir focuses on musical and vocal techniques germane to undergraduate students, and primarily for those singers preparing for a vocation in the field of Music Education. The group frequently performs with the Early Music Ensemble, and has performed at the OMEA conference. Members receive one hour of academic credit per semester.
Collegiate Chorale

Auditions are typically held in the end of August.
The Collegiate Chorale is a highly select, auditioned SATB ensemble of no more than 36 voices, consisting essentially of upperclassmen and graduate students. Chorale members perform frequently on and off campus, touring each spring, and receive two hours of academic credit per semester. Numerous campus and regional performances and tours are an expectation of this ensemble. The group frequently has performed at OMEA and ACDA conferences.
University Choral Society

The University Choral Society is a large, auditioned SATB symphonic chorus consisting of University students, faculty and staff members, and singers from the greater northwest Ohio community. Members of the UCS perform with various orchestras and have performed over the past few years with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra (Ind.), Toledo Symphony Orchestra, and the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Czech Republic. The group also performs annually with the BGSU Philharmonia. Members receive one hour of academic credit.
University Men’s Chorus

The University Men’s Chorus was established in the early 1920s. Disbanded during World War II because of the shortage of men on campus, it was reactivated in 1971 by BGSU Professor Emeritus Richard Mathey, who conducted the group for over 25 years. It is open to all men of the University community. During the past few years the chorus has had between 100 and 125 members, and has toured to Florida, New York City, Washington, D.C., Colorado, and Toronto, Ontario. The group also tours annually throughout Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. The group has recorded several CDs, and has performed at regional and national conferences. Members receive one hour of academic credit per semester.
University Women’s Chorus

The University Women’s Chorus of Bowling Green State University is a select, auditioned treble choral ensemble that performs sacred and secular music from a variety of style periods. The chorus consists of music majors and minors as well as students from other University degree programs. In addition to campus performances, the Women’s Chorus has performed at various community venues including schools and churches and was the featured choir in a local Santa Lucia Festival under the direction of Swedish guest conductor, Lena Ekman Frisk, at Christmas time, 2005. The choir was selected to appear at the 1995 and 1998 OMEA conferences in Columbus and the 2002 OMEA conference in Cincinnati. In addition, the Women’s Chorus has performed on Musical Arts Series at Trinity Episcopal Church in Toledo, at the Nuremburg Trial Colloquium at BGSU and the 2004 Women’s Chorus Festival at Western Michigan University. The spring tour includes performances in Ann Arbor and Traverse City, Michigan, with special appearances at the Michigan-Ohio Women’s Chorus Festival held at the University of Michigan and on the musical arts series of the First Congregational Church in Traverse City.
Vocal Jazz Ensemble

Rehearsals: TR 4:30–5:20 p.m.
The 12-voice Vocal Jazz Ensemble performs a variety of music in the vocal jazz tradition: solo and tight-harmony choral music in the style of groups such as The Manhattan Transfer or The Real Group. The ensemble, which includes a rhythm section made up of BGSU students, each year explores a wide variety of musical styles and genres from bebop to show tunes. The group has already enthusiastic response through its performances on campus and at off-campus sites such at the Manor House at Toledo’s Wildwood MetroPark.
