Band Auditions
Auditions for the 2008 University bands—Concert Band, University Band and Wind Symphony have concluded. Please check back in August 2009 for full details on auditioning for the 2009–2010 season.
Audition Procedures
Please read the following information carefully. In order for the auditions to run smoothly and to be fair to all students, it is important that you prepare your auditions according to the following procedures.
Music Majors
- Band auditions for new and returning students wishing to play in the Wind Symphony and Concert Band will take place on Sunday, August 24, (afternoon/evening) and Monday, August 25. Auditions will be finished by 5 p.m. on Monday (or as close as possible to 5 p.m.).
- All undergraduate wind/percussion music majors are required to take this audition for band with their respective studio teacher. Graduate students wishing to play in bands follow the same procedures.
- Wind and Percussion studio teachers listen to these auditions and make recommendations to the band directors.
- Returning students (music majors) should make every effort possible to audition on Sunday, August 24.
- You can download the appropriate repertoire for your instrument below these procedures to prepare for your audition(s). You should also bring to the audition site two contrasting works of your choice (2 minutes each) that best display your musicianship skills.
Nonmusic Majors
- Students who are not music majors who wish to play in either Wind Symphony or Concert Band must take the audition as outlined above.
- Students who are not music majors who wish to play in University Band are not required to take the above audition. However, it is essential that you report to University Band on the first day of classes (Monday, August 25) at 11:30 a.m. in Kelly Instrumental Rehearsal Hall, MMAC room 1012, for further instructions.
Questions regarding auditions for all BGSU Bands should be directed to: bgsubands@bgsu.edu or by calling (419) 372-2186.
2008 Audition Materials
Each performer should bring two prepared solos or etudes of contrasting styles that demonstrate both his/her musical and technical abilities. In addition, everyone will be asked to play excerpts that are available for his/her specific instrument (see below). Studio teachers will judge auditions. Please see room assignments on the board outside the band office.
