Campus Climate Study of Students
During the Spring 2012 and 2013 semesters, the Office of Multicultural Affairs conducted a campus climate study of undergraduate and graduate students on the main campus of Bowling Green State University.
In Spring 2012, the study was conducted as part of a graduate project for the Applied Inquiry HIED Course by Sherry Early and David Sleasman. In Spring 2013, the study was conducted as part of the office’s broader assessment efforts coordinated by Ray Plaza, Associate Director. The goal is for the Campus Climate study to be undertaken every other year, with the next scheduled study to take place in Spring 2015.
In April 2013, the Office of Multicultural Affairs conducted a Campus Climate Study.
• The Survey was conducted from April 16, 2013 to April 24,
• Survey was sent to all non-white undergraduate and graduate students on the main BGSU campus (around 4,100)
• 197 surveys were collected (4.53% email response rate)
• 141 surveys were fully complete (71.57% completion rate)
• The survey instrument was the same instrument used for the 2012 Campus Climate study that was conducted by two Doctoral students. Minor changes were made to incorporate the inclusion of graduate students.
• The difference between the 2012 and 2013 surveys was that in 2012, the survey was sent to a random sample of BGSU undergraduates.
While the two sample populations are quite distinct, the results provide an opportunity to look at trends as well as to explore areas of similarity and difference.
The study included questions about student’s impressions of faculty, staff, administration, their fellow students (i.e. peers) and about themselves.
The quantitative results are presented in their entirety and show the information for 2013 and 2012. Qualitative responses were also collected and will be a part of the broader analysis.
The Office of Multicultural Affairs is moving forward with its continued analysis of the results and will be exploring options to further understand the trends.
