Databases for Popular Culture Topics

University Libraries has a power search tool that searches about 80% of the library's holdings, including the library catalog and numerous journals.  It's called Summon.  Try it out below.

There are a number of more focused databases useful for researching popular culture topics. Click on the name of the database to find a description and a link for database access.

  • Academic Search Complete
    • indexes scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, and other materials
    • covers a wide range of topics - good place to start research
  • Dissertation Abstracts
    • database of theses and dissertations (all dissertations since 1851)
  • Google Scholar
    • A Google search engine that searches only for scholarly literature, including journal articles, books, preprints, etc., on publisher and academic websites.
  • JSTOR
    • Over a thousand full-text scholarly journals and books covering all subjects in the humanities, sciences and social sciences. History, economics, art, literature, and mathematics are particularly strong. All journal titles are archived back to the first issue, many dating from the early 1800s.
  • LexisNexis Academic
    • good place to find current topics in the news (via newspapers, news magazines, wire services, and news transcripts)
    • can find movie and play reviews as well
  • MasterFILE Premier
    • indexes mainly popular magazines
  • Film and Television Literature Index
    • Indexing for and full text of books and articles covering research in television and film, including theory, preservation and restoration, writing, production, cinematography, and more.
  • Film Literature Index
    • Indexing for scholarly and popular articles in film and television periodicals from 30 countries.
  • FRANCIS (International Humanities and Social Sciences)
    • Citations and abstracts for scholarly publications covering all topics in the humanities and social sciences and published in French, German, Italian and other European languages.
  • Google Scholar
    • A Google search engine that searches only for scholarly literature, including journal articles, books, preprints, etc., on publisher and academic websites.
  • Humanities International Complete
    • Indexing for over 2,100 international scholarly journals covering humanities topics such as history, music, literature, philosophy and religion. Some full text articles are also available.
  • IMDB
  • MLA International Bibliography
    • A detailed index to journal articles, books, book chapters and dissertations published on subjects in modern languages, literatures, folklore, and linguistics. All inclusions are scholarly works.

  • Bibliography of Native North Americans
    • An index covering all aspects of native North American culture, history, and life.

  • Handbook of Latin American Studies
    • Index to books and book chapters, articles, and conference proceedings published worldwide in the field of Latin American Studies.
