Unified Communications

Phase One - Upgrade Network Switches

Why: This phase will upgrade infrastructure in order to support upcoming phases of the Unified Communications (UC) project.

Phase 1 involves upgrading the 560 network switches housed in academic and administrative buildings, making it possible to provide power to the VoIP phones that will be coming as a part of Phase 4.  VoIP phones use Power over Ethernet (PoE) to supply power to the device.

The switch upgrade will also increase the speed from desktop to data closet to 1Gb and increase the building to core of the network up to 10Gb.

When: February 4 – March 20 - This phase has been completed!
What: The network switches in every academic and administrative building across campus will be upgraded.
How: Switch upgrades will generally be scheduled to occur between midnight and 6 a.m.  In order to complete the installations in a short time frame, ITS has contracted with Netech to install these switches in buildings.
Impact: Users will experience a network outage when their building cutover occurs.  The cutover dates and times by building are outlined on the Network Upgrades for Phone Switch web page.
