Why is there a new portal?

Updating to a new portal allows for a move to new hardware and systems. The current MyBGSU portal is maintained on aging hardware and utilizes web technologies that are out of date.

When will the pilot program for the new portal be active?

The first pilot group will begin using the new portal in January 2013 and the second group will begin at the end of February 2013.   

When will the new portal be live/fully implemented?

A production date has not yet been set.  In preparation for the production date, a link to the New BGSU portal has been placed within MyBGSU.  Users are invited to use this new portal to test the various features and provide feedback.

Why is a new portal being rolled out now?

It is recognized that this will be a big change and the plan is to do a “rolling” rollout in order to introduce the new portal and allow users to become familiar with it prior to the retirement of the current portal.

Is all the development work on the new portal being completed in-house or is the project team working with any other developers on this project?

In addition to in-house development we have partnered with LifeRay and Unicom for this project. LifeRay provided an open-source base product for the portal and Unicom has been consulted in regards to the single sign-on technology and the look and feel of the new portal. BGSU staff members are developing the portlets and setting up the portal to provide services.   

Is the new portal going to be an app or will it be going to a web page?

The new portal will be utilized as a web page.   

What will happen to the current MyBGSU portal?

The current MyBGSU portal will continue to run until a production date for the new portal has been set.  After that time, the current MyBGSU will be retired and the new portal will be utilized.

Will the new portal utilize a mobile app?

There will not be a separate mobile app but rather the new portal will be set up so the web site information will work correctly on mobile devices. 

What browsers can I use with the new portal?

The new portal will support IE8/9 and current releases of Firefox, Safari and Chrome. Although these are versions supported by the portal they may not be the currently supported version for applications accessed through the portal, such as PeopleSoft.   

Can students add items to the To Do List?

The student To Do List is populated with information configured within PeopleSoft. As such, individuals will not be able to add items to the To Do list.   

Will students be able to get to the Health Center page from the new portal?

Yes, the project team is working to ensure that all services currently available in my.bgsu.edu are migrated to the new system.   

What do I do if I have an idea for the new portal?

Ideas and suggestions for the new portal may be submitted via the feedback page .

How are decisions about features to be in the new portal being approached?

Once the portal infrastructure is in place, suggestions for portlets to be added will be accepted. Suggestions may be submitted using the feedback page . Submitted suggestions will be reviewed and prioritized by a portal steering committee. Various areas across campus are represented on the portal steering committee.
