Glossary of Terms

 

CAS - 

(Central Authentication Service) A single sign-on protocol for the web.  Designed to provide a user with access to multiple applications after providing appropriate credentials only once.

Liferay - 

An open sourced Java based portal that allows for custom portal theme development for desktops, tablets and mobile devices.


LDAP

(Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) An application protocol for accessing and maintaining distributed directory information services over an Internet Protocol (IP) network.

Page
A page is a container within a portal that can group logical items together.  Pages can contain both portlets and pages.  Access to pages can also be defined by roles that are setup in the my.bgsu.edu portal.

 

Portal
A single web based environment where multiple applications can run and be integrated together.  A portal is consists of multiple portlets and pages to provide one unified user experience.

 

Portlet
A portlet is a piece of software that will be run inside of a web portal.  A portlet can be used to pull or push data to other enterprise systems.  

Sakai - 

Community developed software to enhance teaching, learning and research. 

Shibboleth - 

An encrypted user log-in management system.

WSRP - 

(Web services for remote portlets)  A network protocol standard designed for communications with remote portals.
