Configuring VirusScan
This sequence of steps enables auto-scanning of removable media (such as floppy disks and Zip disks), files downloaded from the Internet, and e-mail attachments.
- Right-click the McAfee VShield icon on the Windows task bar. Choose Properties and then System Scan on the pop-up menu. (Alternatively, search for "vsconfig.exe" using the Windows Find utility.)
- Click the Wizard button.
- A welcome window will appear. Click the Next button.
- You will be asked if you want to scan for viruses in the background. Select the radio button labeled Yes and click the Next button.
- When asked for the type of e-mail client you are using, check the option labeled Internet e-mail clients and click the Next button.
- Select the radio button labeled Yes, do scan my downloaded files for viruses and click the Next button.
- Select the radio button labeled Yes, enable hostile applet protection and access prevention to unsafe websites and click the Next button.
- Click the Finish button.
- Click the OK button to finish configuring VirusScan.
Enabling the AutoUpdate feature
This sequence of steps enables AutoUpdate of VirusScan virus definition files (sometimes called DAT files) on a regular basis. This is an important configuration option!- Click the following sequence of menus:
Start -> Programs -> McAfee VirusScan -> McAfee VirusScan Scheduler
(As a shortcut, double-click the McAfee VirusScan Scheduler icon, a small magnifying glass, on the Windows task bar. Alternatively, search for "avconsol.exe" using the Windows Find utility.)
- In the McAfee VirusScan Scheduler window, double-click the AutoUpdate icon.
- Select the Schedule tab.
- Check the option labeled Enabled.
- Choose your desired Run options by clicking on the radio buttons.
- Depending on your Run options, complete the Start at field directly below it.
- Click the OK button, your configuration is now complete.
Using VirusScan
This sequence of steps shows how to scan your hard disk for viruses.- Click the following sequence of menus:
Start -> Programs -> McAfee VirusScan -> McAfee VirusScan
(Alternatively, search for "scan32.exe" using the Windows Find utility.)
- Click the Scan Now button.
