System Requirements

  1. Microsoft Windows 95/98
  2. Netscape Navigator 4.0 or Internet Explorer 4.0
  3. 21 MB free disk space
  4. A blank high-density diskette (needed only if you create an emergency disk)

This document shows how to download and install VirusScan.

Clients upgrading from VirusScan 3.x or currently using some other antiviral program (Norton AntiVirus, Anitviral Toolkit Pro, etc.) should uninstall these programs before continuing.

It is recommended that you print this page so you can follow along and mark your progress.

Downloading VirusScan from the BGSU Software Server

This sequence of steps downloads the latest version of VirusScan. Please quit all running applications (except your web browser) before continuing.

Note: It will take about thirty-five (35) minutes to download the software and complete the installation process.

  1. Type this address into your favorite browser:
    http://software.bgsu.edu/
  2. Click on the Windows Software link on the sidebar to display the list of Keyed and Unkeyed software.
  3. Under Unkeyed Software, select McAfee VirusScan 4.5.
  4. On the File Download window, click Save.
  5. Click Save again to download the installer to your desktop.
  6. When you are notified that the download is complete, click on the Close button.

Installing VirusScan

This sequence of steps installs the latest version of VirusScan. After completing the previous sequence of steps, the installation will begin automatically.
  1. A welcome dialog will appear. Click the Next button.
  2. A license agreement will be displayed. Read the license agreement and click the Yes button.
  3. The installer will search for previously installed versions of VirusScan. If a previous version is found, click the Remove button.
  4. A Setup Type dialog will appear. Check the Typical install option. Click the Next button.
  5. A dialog will appear asking you to confirm the installation settings. Click the Next button.
  6. The installer will report that a "Scan of system area is complete." Click the OK button.
  7. The Emergency Disk Wizard will appear. Click the Cancel button (but see the section "Creating an emergency disk" later in this document).
  8. To read the latest information about VirusScan, click the Yes button. When finished, choose Exit on the File menu.
  9. A report of changes will be displayed. Click the Next button.
  10. To restart your computer, click the Finish button.

Updating the DAT files

This sequence of steps shows how to update your virus definition files (sometimes called DAT files). This is an important part of the installation process!
  1. Click the following sequence of menus:
    Start -> Programs -> Network Associates -> VirusScan Console

    Note that the menus you select may vary if your virus software is not installed in your Programs folder.

    (As a shortcut, double-click the VirusScan Scheduler icon, a small magnifying glass, on the Windows task bar.)

  2. In the VirusScan Scheduler window, double-click the AutoUpdate icon.
  3. Click the Run Now button.
  4. AutoUpdate will automatically shutdown and restart VirusScan VShield and then notify you that the DAT file update was successful Click on the OK button and you are done.

Now that you have completed the installation, you are ready to continue with the configuration.
