Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 on Windows XP
You will need these browser features to use Blackboard 6.
- Clearing Browser Cache for Temporary Internet files
- Clearing Jar Cache for Applet JAR files
- Enabling Cookies
- Enabling JavaScript
- Enabling the Java2 Environment
- Disabling any pop-up window blockers, if installed
- Security warnings

Throughout the instructions below, words that are italicized are exactly as they appear on your browser's menu.
Clearing Browser Cache and Setting your Browser to Display the Current Version of the Page
- Click Tools on the Internet Explorer menu bar and select Internet Options...
- On the Internet Options window, select the General tab.
- In the Temporary Internet files area, click the Delete Files... button.
NOTE: Be careful not to select Delete Cookies instead of Delete Files as this will remove all the cookies stored on the computer. - Click OK on the Delete Files dialog box to confirm.
- In the Temporary Internet files area, click on the Settings button.
- In the settings window, select 'Every visit to the page' and click OK .
- Click OK on the Internet Options window to close it.
Clearing Jar Cache
- On the Start Menu, select Control Panel.
- On the Control Panel, select Java Plug-in to open the Java Plug-in Control Panel.
- Click on the Cache tab.
- Click on the Clear button in the upper right-hand corner of the window and click on "Yes" to confirm your request.
- Close the Java Plug-in Control Panel.
- Close all browsers and other programs.
- Restart your computer.
Enabling Cookies
- Click Tools on the Internet Explorer menu bar and select Internet Options...
- On the Internet Options window, select the Privacy tab.
- Set the Security level for this zone to Medium .
- Then click on the Advanced... button.
- On the Advanced Privacy Settings dialog box that is displayed, make sure under Cookies that Override automatic cookie handling is unchecked and click on the OK button.
- Click OK on the Internet Options window to exit.
Enabling JavaScript
- Click Tools on the Internet Explorer menu bar and select Internet Options...
- On the Internet Options window, select the Security tab.
- From the list of web content zones at the top of the Security options select the internet icon.
- Then click on the Custom Level... button.
- In the Security Settings window that pops up, scroll down to the item that reads Active Scripting and select the Enable option.
- Click on the OK button at the bottom of the Security Settings window.
- Click on the OK button at the bottom of the Internet Options window.
Enabling the Java 2 Environment
Java Runtime Environment J2SE v 1.4.2_X (JRE for Windows) is required.
If you have an older version installed, uninstall it before installing the current version.
Click here to download the current version and follow these instructions:
- Click on the DOWNLOAD link under the JRE column next to 32-bit/64-bit for Windows for the current J2SE (Java 2 Standard Edition) application.
- Select 'Accept' on the License Agreement and click Continue.
- Under the Windows Platform, click on the Windows Offline Installation to start the download.
- On the File Download window, click on the Save button and save the file on your desktop.
- Click on the Close button when the download is complete.
- Locate the installer on your desktop and double-click on it to start the installation.
- Click on 'I accept the license agreement' and then the Next button.
- Typical install is recommended. Click on the Next button again.
- Click Finish when the installation is complete.
- Restart your computer for configuration changes to take effect.
- Put installer in your recycle bin.
Java must be enabled to run in your web browser and will be set that way by default during installation.
