In an effort to provide BGSU with the best possible antiviral software, Information Technology Services has partnered with
Network Associates, Inc. (NAI). These licensed programs are freely-available to all current BGSU faculty, staff, and students
for use on home or departmental computers. Clients using Macintosh systems are encouraged to install Virex, while Windows
XP users should install VirusScan 8.01i and Windows 98 users should install VirusScan 4.5.1. Clients using an on-campus computer
with network access can download either program from this web page.
Clients using an off-campus computer can get Virex and VirusScan from the
Anti-Virus Internet CD.
There are two steps: install the program (e.g. the scanning engine) and then install the relevant virus definition (DAT) file
that lets the scanning engine know what viruses to search for. As new viruses are discovered, companies that make antiviral
programs release new virus data files. To guard your personal computer against recently discovered viruses, you
must keep your virus definition file (DAT) file current. Both programs provide a method for updating your virus definition files
(DAT) files but it will only work when your computer is on and you have a network connection. For Windows systems, you can
set up a task to automatically update your DAT files using AutoUpdate.
Macintosh OS X Systems: Virex
On-campus clients should use the links below to download and install Virex and update their virus definition file. A new virus
definition file is released about once a month.
Note: Our technical staff has determined that this version of Virex is not fully functional. A newer version is expected to be
available soon.
Windows XP Systems: VirusScan 8.0i
On-campus clients should use the links below to download and install the application. The Update Now option included in the
installation will do the intial update of the virus definition (DAT) files. You can also enable AutoUpdate to automatically
keep your DAT files current if your system is on when AutoUpdate is scheduled to run.
Windows 98 Systems: VirusScan 4.5.1
On-campus clients should use the links below to download and install the application. The Run Update Now option included in
the installation will do the intial update of the virus definition (DAT) files. See Configuring VirusScan for details on enabling
AutoUpdate to keeping your DAT files current.
