The following is provided to assist BGSU students, faculty, and staff with the protection and safe handling of information
on computer systems and the University network.
Overview
Windows Update is simply a procedure for downloading the latest patches (software fixes) for your version of Windows. When
security vulnerabilities are discovered Microsoft will attempt to release a patch to prevent the vulnerability from being
exploited. Sometimes these releases also deal with an error or a flaw discovered in the operating system.
Procedure
Visit the Windows Update site and scan your computer to see if updates are necessary.
Important - Microsoft does not notify you about the need to perform updates using email. See the related story and information about a past virus (such
