Name: Salim Elwazani
Architecture & Environmental Design

My work at BGSU as Assistant Professor of Architecture throughout the 1990s honed my teaching expertise, but more conspicuously tuned my research direction and productivity culminating with promotion in the academic rank. From the beginning, my scholarly activities at BGSU have had international slant through the nature of research topics, collaborating colleagues, and dissemination venues. Most of the hundred plus of my scholarly works (journal articles, proceedings papers, book chapters, presentations, invited speeches, and the like) have links to themes, geographies, and institutions in the Middle East, Europe, and other parts of the world.

While student learning and curricular structuring have been a key domain of my activities in support of the fledging BGSU Department of Architecture & Environmental Design, reaching out to “community” as a catalyst for advancing education, research, and service was a hallmark all along. The focus on Northwest Ohio and the international arena contributed distinctively in this regard. In line of the Department’s drive, I spearheaded a variety of community linked class projects where professionals (architects, planners, and administrators), agencies, and community groups were brought to play active roles. In return, the Department received the fruits of engagement through vital and rewarding student experiences. Equally important, the Department enjoyed valuable support of the Northwest Ohio architects and design professionals especially for our Master of Architecture’s on-going accreditation process by NAAB—the National Architectural Accrediting Board.

My involvement in the Fulbright Program has been another keystone in sustaining my global leanings and activities. I was fortunate to receive a Fulbright Scholar award to Bahrain in 2001-2002 and a Fulbright-Aalto University Distinguished Chair to Finland in 2012-2013. These year-long, life changing experiences convey immensely the potential of the academy in bringing vibrant cultures together. The implications of Fulbright projects on my career in terms of understanding, collaboration, and productivity transcend the personal gain to an urge for me to inspire others. Through a personal touch, I strive to make the value of international engagement more and more perceptible to the BGSU community, particularly to students.
