Doctoral Student studying Biological Sciences

1. What is your degree program?

I am a doctoral student studying Biological Sciences with a specialization in plant molecular biology.

2. Why did you choose to come to BGSU?

I came to BGSU because it has the academic program that I am interested and more importantly, I felt warmly welcomed. The professors and staff from the biology department and the Center for International Program (predecessor of ISS) were very helpful and friendly since I started to apply for BGSU.

3. What is one interesting experience you have had while at BGSU?

My favorite and interesting experience at BGSU is my three-year experience working for the Graduate Student Senate. I was firstly elected to be one of the two Representatives-at-Large, representing and speaking for all graduate students in the Senate. One year later, I was appointed to be the International Affairs Chair, representing all international graduate students and working with International Student Services for the benefit of BGSU international students. Last year, I was elected as the President, known to be the first international student in this position. It was most interesting and impressive to me since I got to work with many students, faculty, staff, and administrators on the issues that may affect every student at BGSU. I learned a lot about the management and governance of our University.

4. What advice would you give to other international students considering BGSU?

Be confident and grab the opportunities in front of you.

At BGSU, there are many programs designed to help students succeed not only in study but also in leadership development, networking, collaboration, careers, and so on. There are very good opportunities and resources for international students to get involved on campus and appreciate American campus culture.

5. What do you plan on doing after graduating from BGSU?

I hope to work as a science communicator that engages the public and schools with science and brings the work of biologists out of the lab and into the spotlight.
