Preventive Technical Safeguards in Effect for Copyright Material

When a computer is determined to be using P2P software to obtain illegal copyright material or when using an evasive P2P client, a preventive technical safeguard will be implemented for the following time frames:

For users in Administration Buildings:

Level 1:

• • The first offense will generate a safeguard which will redirect the user’s web browser for 15 minutes to inform the user of the computer’s activity.

Level 2:

• • The second offense will generate a safeguard that will prevent all P2P activity and will redirect the user’s web browser for 1 hour to inform the user of the computer’s activity.

Level 3:

• • The third offense will generate a safeguard that will prevent all P2P activity and will redirect the user’s web browser for 2 hours to inform the user of the computer’s activity.
    
    

For users in Residential Halls:

Level 1:

• • The first offense will generate a safeguard which will redirect the user’s web browser for 24 hours to inform the user of the computer’s activity.

Level 2:

• • The second offense will generate a safeguard that will prevent all P2P activity for 30 days and will redirect the user’s web browser for 14 days to inform the user of the computer’s activity.

Level 3:

• • The third offense will generate a safeguard that will prevent all P2P activity and will redirect the user’s web browser to inform the user of the computer’s activity.  This safeguard will be lifted after the student meets with Student Affairs and Student Affairs gives the student permission to have access.

Wireless:

• • All P2P will be prevented.  Upon the starting of a P2P application all external web browser functionality will be temporarily disabled until the application and its services are stopped.

Note:  All internal BGSU network services such as; mail.bgsu.edu, my.bgsu.edu, myfiles.bgsu.edu and file shares will still be functional throughout these preventive safeguards.
