Information Security Office
Data Destruction & Recycling Service

Services Offered

WIPING AND DESTROYING DATA

This service will fulfill BGSU affiliate’s need of erasing or destroying sensitive data and recycling of aged materials. For media that may have University data stored on them, it is important to follow document retention timelines designated by your office's Records Retention Schedule. For more information, see the Records Retention Schedule section on the University Archives website.

All of the following electronic media can be brought to the Data Destruction & Recycling Service:

  • Hard drives (IDE, SCSI, SATA)
  • Floppy/Zip disks
  • USB flash drives
  • CD/DVDs
  • Media cards
  • Tapes

Note: Due to sensitive nature, media for destruction must be submitted in-person. To schedule drop-offs outside of posted hours or schedule pickup service, please contact infosec@bgsu.edu.

The main objective for hard drives will be to format the media by DoD (Department of Defense) standards but if this option is not viable, destruction of the media will be the subsequent measure.  USB drives will be erased or destroyed based on need and ability.  All CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, zip disks and tapes will be destroyed.  Upon request, a Certificate of Destruction can be provided upon completion.

Note: The erasing process destroys all data and programs on the device. Operating system and application software will need to be reinstalled after the procedure.

High volume paper shredding will be provided by Certified Document Destruction scheduled by the Center for Archival Collections.  Please contact them for further details on this service.

RECYCLING EQUIPMENT

This service will also provide recycling capabilities for personally owned devices.  A BGSU affiliate may bring in their used computer and accessories for proper disposal.

The following equipment will be accepted:

  • Computers
  • Monitors (CRT & Flat screen)
  • Mice
  • Keyboards
  • Printers
  • Laptops
  • Cellular phones
  • External devices

Storage space only permits single computer drop-offs.  If larger quantity disposal is needed, please contact (419) 372-8618 or infosec@bgsu.edu.
