Dr. Shields received his PhD. degree from Louisiana State University . He is a Past-Chair of the Performance Studies Division of the National Communication Association (NCA), Past Chair of the Theatre Division of NCA, as well as a Past-Treasurer of Performance Studies International (PSi).
He currently serves on the Executive Committee of NCA as Chair of the Finance Board.

Dr Shields was honored by the Central States Communication Association as the recipient of the Outstanding Performance Studies and Theatre Interest Group Scholar. He also received the Leslie Irene Coger Award from NCA.

In the summer of 2004, Dr. Shields was a Scholar-in-Residence at Princeton University for a Summer Seminar program sponsored by the National Endowment for thee Humanities called "Opera Across Disciplines".

Research/ Publications:
Dr. Shields' research interests include opera and operatic performance as cultural text, as well as performance pedagogy, and staging image and text. 

Dr. Shields is the past Senior Editor for Theatre Annual: A Journal of Performance Studies published through the College of William and Mary. He also serves on the editorial board for Text and Performance Quarterly. His publications appear in The Future of Performance Studies, Text and Performance Quarterly, and Theatre Topics.

He recently staged an operatic rarity, Cavalli's La virtù de' Strali d'Amore. An artistic collaboration it featured faculty and students from BGSU as well as the Eastman School of Music.The performance edition was prepared from archival sources. International Baroque opera specialist and lute performer, Paul O'Dette, was the music director for the production performed at BGSU as well as the Eastman School of Music.
