GSO Opening Session

All GSO participants are required to attend.
Special Performance: The Five Ring Diversity Circus
This entertaining look at diversity will be performed at the Opening Session by members of the former BGSU Humanities Troupe. Tuesday morning, GSO participants will have an opportunity to dialogue with other students in discussion group sessions that will provide training on how best to work with the various situations that were covered in the performance. Locations for assigned discussion group will be provided on each participants session schedule form.

A Theatrical Look at Communication in the Workplace
Performers of the Humanities Troupe use theatrical tools to engage in dialogue regarding behavior in the workplace. The scenes offer ways to look at the complexities of communication, which varies depending on word choice, body language, vocal inflection, as well as the speaker and listener.

Research and Administrative Assistantships: Both Sides of the Coin
This session is designed especially for Research Assistants (RAs), and is meant to highlight critical reciprocal aspects of employment as a research assistant--what an RA should expect to gain from this experience as well as what and how s/he should expect to contribute to a research enterprise. The session will include such topics as the following: 1) role of RAs in the research enterprise; 2) notion of research apprenticeship; 3) obligations of RAs in the laboratory; 4) research ethics (Human Subjects and laboratory animal protection); 5) differences across disciplines; and 6) rights of RAs (e.g., hours in the contract, etc.).
