Graduate Catalog 2003-2004

Computer Resources

Instruction and research are enhanced by the technology services available for students, faculty, and staff. A recently completed BGSupernet project has provided BGSU with a complete data, voice, and video fiber optic network based on Gigabit Ethernet. A recent upgrade of the mainframe to an IBM Z800 Model 2066-001 and partnering in an Internet 2 consortium are all in support of the technology initiatives taking place throughout the BGSU community.

Responsible for development and implementation of the technology strategic plan for classroom support, administrative systems, and communications infrastructure is the Chief Information Officer (CIO). The Office of the CIO aligns Information Technology Services (ITS), Classroom Technology Services (CTS), Student Technology Center, and Office of Web Development to establish an environment in which the application of technology enhances and improves teaching, learning, research, and university operations.

Upon admission to BGSU, students receive a BGNet account that provides access to web based e-mail and to My BGSU, the campus web portal. The campus web portal is the primary means used to communicate selected academic and administrative information and also provides the mechanism for use of Blackboard online courseware for instructional use. Computer labs located throughout campus provide access to technology for general computing applications. The BGSupernet project has provided the infrastructure for delivery of digital video streaming service to all on campus buildings with full-screen, full-motion video that is fully controllable by the instructor. Digital video may be accessed on-campus, from desktops and in classrooms, and can be integrated in distance learning courses as well.

The Student Technology Center is focused on assisting students in learning how to use technology in support of their academic coursework. Opportunities for faculty and staff to attend technology training sessions are provided throughout the academic year. The Technology Support Center (TSC) is the central point of contact for questions regarding technology on campus.

Additional information about technology available throughout BGSU can be found on the Internet at http://www.bgsu.edu/offices/cio/
