Title IX

What is Title IX?

Title IX of the federal Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of a person's gender in educational programs or activities operated by recipients of federal financial assistance.

Although it is often perceived as a law that applies only to athletic programs, Title IX is much broader and protects all students, employees, and visitors to campus from gender discrimination.

Sexual harassment, including sexual misconduct, is a form of gender discrimination and is strictly prohibited by federal and state laws, and BGSU Policy.  Any student, faculty, or staff member with a concern or question about Title IX may seek the assistance of the Title IX Coordinator or a Deputy Coordinator.

Prohibition Against Retaliation.

Retaliation against members of the BGSU community who exercise their right to file charges of discrimination or harassment is strictly prohibited by state and federal law and University policy. No person at the University may harass, coerce, intimidate, or discriminate against an individual who has filed a complaint or participated in a complaint resolution process. Charges of retaliation will be investigated by the Office of Equity and Diversity.

Who is responsible for Title IX at BGSU?

It is the responsibility of all BGSU community members to comply with the laws and regulations of Title IX. Barbara Waddell, Director of the Office of Equity and Diversity serves as BGSU's Title IX Coordinator. She is assisted by six Deputy Coordinators. (Contact information for Coordinator & Deputy Coordinators is listed in table below).

When and how should I contact a Title IX Coordinator?

Any student, faculty or staff member who has a concern about sex discrimination or sexual misconduct is encouraged to seek the assistance of a Title IX Coordinator. Contact a coordinator when you want to understand your options if you think you may have encountered sex discrimination or sexual misconduct.
