The Pretzer International fund was created through the generosity of Drs. Wallace and Diane Pretzer. Wallace is a professor emeritus of English at BGSU, where he developed the General Studies Writing Program (1972), taught Linguistics and English as a Second Language, and trained students to teach English as a Second Language. Diane is an associate professor emeritus and former chair of Romance Languages, where she specialized in Spanish language and Latin American-related courses. Both are avid international travelers and enjoy the relationships they have built with students and faculty, particularly those involved in the BGSU-Xi’an International Studies University exchange program. Wally was a member of the first faculty Xi’an exchange in 1983-84.

The primary purpose of the Pretzer International Fund is to encourage and facilitate international experiences for individuals associated with BGSU.

Required

  • Graduate and Undergraduate students in Spanish, French, or German language
    programs
  • A 500-word essay explaining your interest in
    an international experience
  • Acceptance into a language-focused study
    abroad program

Preferred

  • Foreign language graduate students who wish to participate in the summer abroad program who have not completed their “first-year abroad” component.
  • Highest preference goes to students studying Spanish first, then French, then German
  • Undergraduate students majoring in Spanish, French, or German wishing to
    study in a country appropriate to their language.

Selection Process 
A Selection Committee in coordination with the Director of the Center for International Programs and the Director of Education Abroad will review applications and contact the students.

Amount of the Award 
One award will be deposited into the recipient’s bursar account after July 1.

Awards will be announced in April.

Completed applications must be received by the BGSU Education Abroad Office by March 1. The Pretzer International Fund is not renewable and late applications will not be accepted. Mail, fax, scan/email, or deliver all applications to:
