Health Insurance
Bowling Green State University takes seriously the need for all study abroad students to have ample coverage for their health and travel needs.
International Student Identity Card
Every BGSU student who leaves the borders of the United States for academic purposes is required to purchase the International Student Identity Card. Most importantly the ISIC contains an accidental death and dismemberment policy which offers coverage for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation. Additionally, ISIC provides minimal health and accident coverage as well as modest traveler’s services.
This insurance is valid anywhere in the world, but students will pay up front for medical services, save all receipts, and file claim forms to seek reimbursement.
On a lighter note, ISIC is especially useful as a way to prove student status when purchasing airline, rail or bus tickets, or entry tickets to cinemas, museums, and other cultural facilities worldwide. The ISIC may be purchased for $22 at the Education Abroad Office. Many non-BGSU programs include the ISIC within their mandatory tuition and fees.
Additional Information
Your son or daughter may be covered by a student health and accident insurance policy that is issued through his or her program or university overseas. That second health and accident policy does not replace his or her comprehensive health insurance issued stateside which must be maintained in order to cover such possibilities as an illness or injury sustained while traveling or any pre-existent condition.
In the event of serious illness or an accident, the Education Abroad Office very much wants to be notified: 419.372.0479 and/or edabroad@bgnet.bgsu.edu. If you need to contact the office in the event of an emergency after office hours, please contact the BGSU Police at 419.372.2346 who will contact the Director of Education Abroad.
