The United States Department of Education and its Office of Educational Technology are highlighting the movement to one-to-one digital devices in K-12 classrooms. Whether a laptop, tablet, e-reader or smartphone, students are either bringing or being provided a device to use for learning in many schools at this time. As the center’s white paper, Using Digital Resources to Support Personalized Learning Experiences in K-12 Classrooms: The Evolution of Mobile Devices as Innovations in Schools in Northwest Ohio, documents, schools in northwest Ohio are clearly a part of this trend.
So how do teachers and students maximize learning outcomes by taking advantage of mobile devices in the classroom? Can these resources be used to personalize learning experiences for students, encourage collaboration, strengthen global connections, assess competencies, and share academic progress? During the M-Learning Symposium K-12 teachers, school administrators, higher education faculty and community members will come together to explore these topics.
If you, or someone at your school, would like to share what you are doing in the area of BYOD or adopting mobile devices, please submit a proposal for a session at the symposium. Last year’s interactions at the Digital Texts Symposium demonstrated how beneficial and exciting it is to learn from each other. Dr. Paul Kim is the Chief Technology Officer and Assistant Dean of the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University.
An education technology entrepreneur, Dr. Kim leads initiatives involving the design of learning technologies, educational research, and community development. In a trans-disciplinary project aiming to promote innovation and competition by constructing a Programmable and Open Mobile Internet (POMI 2020), Dr. Kim designs and implements mobile technologies and social learning environments.
Michael Gorman, is a graduate of Western Michigan University, Indiana University, and Johns Hopkins University’s. He has partnered with ISTE and various educational, governmental, and business organizations and foundations. He oversees a one to one laptop programs and digital professional development for Southwest Allen County Schools near Fort Wayne, Indiana. He is also a consultant for Discovery Education, ISTE, My Big Campus, and November Learning. He is also on the National Faculty for BIE (BUCK Institute) and an Adviser for Tech & Learning Magazine.
