All Rights Reserved ========================================= Product Release: May 2003 - DAT Version: 4258 - Engine Version: 4160 ========================================= Thank you for using Virex software. This file contains important information regarding this release. We strongly recommend that you read the entire document. _________________________________________ WHAT'S IN THIS FILE - New Features - Installation and System Requirements - Updating this Anti-virus Software - Program Files Installed - Known Issues - Documentation - Contacting McAfee and Network Associates - Copyright and Trademark Attributions - Trademarks - License Agreement _________________________________________ NEW FEATURES The Virex 7.2.1 application includes eUpdate technology that updates the virus definition (DAT) files from a button on the Virex toolbar. Virex 7.2.1 supports both HTTP and FTP download methods. See the online Help that comes with Virex to find out more about the options available to you. The Preferences dialog box contains new updating options that set Virex to automatically check for updated DAT files when you launch the application, start your computer or whenever you want to scan. If it finds that new DAT files are available, it applies them to your computer. If you also set the "Scan At Login" preference, Virex then scans your Home folder using the new DAT files. IMPORTANT: You cannot update the DAT files using eUpdate unless you are logged in as an administrator. If not, you must log out of your computer and log on again using an administrator account. _________________________________________ INSTALLATION AND SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Please see product documentation for complete information regarding installation and system requirements. _________________________________________ UPDATING THIS ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE Your anti-virus software must be kept up-to-date to ensure protection against new viruses. This scanner detects not only Macintosh-specific viruses, but also Windows-based viruses and UNIX-based viruses. Macintosh DAT files are normally updated monthly. However, by updating at least fortnightly, you can protect your system from harboring many PC-based and UNIX-based viruses, and scripts and macros. There are three methods available to update your virus definition (DAT) files: - On demand; by using the eUpdate feature in the Virex 7.2.1 software. - Monthly; by using the Virex 7.2.1 update package Installer. - Weekly; by manually copying the DAT files in to the vscanx folder. To update your DAT files using eUpdate with the default update settings: 1. Open the Virex main window and click the eUpdate button on the toolbar. The software connects to the DAT download location and checks for available DAT updates that are newer than the DAT files that you are currently using. 2. If a new DAT file is available, the software prompts you for your administrator password. Once you provide it and click OK, Virex immediately contacts the server that you specified in the eUpdate Server Settings dialog box and downloads the newest DAT file that is available. IMPORTANT: You cannot update the DAT file using eUpdate unless you are logged in as an administrator. If not, you must log out of your computer and log on again using an administrator account. 3. If your DAT file is current, the application tells you so in the Results area. To stop the DAT download, click the Stop button. You cannot stop an update once Virex starts to install the DAT file onto your computer. NOTE: Virex offers some update options on the Preferences dialog box. To set the options that you want to use, click the Preferences button and see the options in the Virus Update area. To update your DAT files on a semimonthly basis: 1. Click the .GZ Virex update file that is on your chosen download location. By default, Download Manager places the update .GZ file on your computer's desktop. The file name comprises a set of digits that represent the product version, then the year, month and date that the update is released. 2. Locate the update .GZ file that is on your desktop and double-click it to create a .PKG file. 3. Double-click the .PKG file to start the update Installer. 4. Follow the prompts in the Installer. The Installer updates the MAC and PC DAT files in the Virex 7.2 vscanx folder. Click the Clear button on the Virex toolbar to have the software report the new DAT file number in the Results area. To update your DAT files on a weekly basis: NOTE: To update the DAT files using this method, you need to login as an administrator (you do this by using the su command); OS X system security prevents many files and folders being visible to users. We recommend that only experienced command-line users attempt the weekly method. 1. Download the UNIX DAT files from; http://www.mcafeeb2b.com/naicommon/download/dats/mcafee_4x.asp 2. The downloaded file will decompress and create a folder entitled "dat-xxxx Folder" where xxxx is an internal version number. The folder contains several DAT files and other files. 3. In a Terminal window, enter the command su root. When prompted, enter the root password. 4. Change directory to the "dat-xxxx Folder" using a command like: cd "/dats/dat-xxxx Folder" 5. Enter the following command, which copies the new DAT files to replace the existing ones. cp *.dat /usr/local/vscanx 6. Close the Terminal window. Your DAT files have been updated. _________________________________________ PROGRAM FILES INSTALLED The following files are installed with the Virex software: /Applications/Virex 7 Virex application folder. /Applications/Virex 7/Virex 7.2.app Virex application. /Applications/Virex 7/ReadMe.rtf This file. /Applications/Virex 7/Virex 7.2. The Virex eUpdate feature uses the package Installer to update your DAT files on versions of Mac OS X that are earlier than Mac OS X 10.2 because some eUpdate components are not fully supported on previous versions of the operating system. When the update completes, simply click Close on the Installer panel. The Results area in the Virex software shows that your DAT files are now up to date. _________________________________________ DOCUMENTATION This product includes a documentation set that consists of manuals saved in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (.PDF) and an online Help system.
