The Major

The Women's Studies major consists of a multidisciplinary program of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Students majoring in Women's Studies will complete the following requirements:

  • WS 200 Introduction to Women's Studies
  • WS 273 History of Feminist Thought and Action
  • WS 305 Women of Color in the U.S.
  • WS 313 Contemporary Global Feminisms
  • WS 371 Gender & Practice in Community Based Work AND WS 401 Practicum in Women's Studies
    OR
  • Research Methods (to be approved) AND WS 499 Senior Thesis in Women's Studies
  • 7 courses (21 hours) on women and/or gender

The Minor

To earn a minor in Women's Studies a student will complete 24 credit hours:

  • WS 200 Introduction to Women's Studies
  • WS 273 History of Feminist Thought and Action
  • WS 305 Women of Color in the U.S.
  • WS 313 Contemporary Global Feminisms
  • 3 courses (9 credit hours) women and/or gender (at least one must be at 400 level)

Senior Seminar and Internship

Major students have two options for completing their Women's Studies degree. The first option is a capstone experience for seniors that allows women's studies students to mix academics with activism and/or explore women's issues in a variety of contexts, locally, nationally, and, internationally. It is tailored to meet individual interests and practical or personal concerns, and it includes a supervised practicum and weekly seminar meetings.

Senior Thesis in Women's Studies

The second option for graduating students in to complete a senior thesis in Women's Studies. Students will work closely with a faculty advisor in the design, data collection and analysis, and writing of an original research project on a topic of interest in Women's Studies. Students will complete both a written manuscript and an oral presentation. Students must complete an approved research methods course before undertaking this project.

Steps for completing the thesis project include:

  • Designing a research study
  • Gaining HSRB approval
  • Data Collection
  • Data Analysis
  • Writing a final undergraduate thesis
  • Oral presentation of the study
