Scientific and technical communication by its very name suggests that there are two areas of required study: communication
and science or technology. You will complete 12 credit hours in a cognate area. This cognate provides you the flexibility
to select your own area of scientific or technical study on the basis of your educational and career goals. Therefore, it
is highly individualized and often interdisciplinary in nature.
You can select courses for your cognate from any department on campus. Be sure to check with instructors in other departments
about the availability of courses. In the past, students have pursued cognates in such diverse areas as:
- Astronomy
- Management Information Systems
- Computer Science
- Training in Business and Industry
- Visual Communication Technology
- Cognitive Psychology
- Medical and Science Writing
For example, Visual Communication Technology may be taken as a cognate area with the following courses:
- VCT 566. Principles of Multimedia Production
- TECH 665. Computer Courseware Design
- ENG 684. Writing Process for Online Documentation
- VCT 560. Digital Photography
For details, please read Guidelines for Selecting a Cognate Area of Study.
