Boy in Hall

Adolescence is a time during which many consequential decisions are made. A key task of this period is the development and crystallization of a self-identity. During this process, the adolescent begins to pull away from their parents and align their attitudes and behaviors with those of their close friends. This is further fueled by the broad range of experiences adolescents begin to encounter as they navigate key life transitions. These experiences shape the adolescent and the result is an emerging self-identity that affects partner choices and relationship experiences. While input from family and friends is still important, it is during this time that the romantic partner becomes an increasingly major figure in the adolescent's life and begins to replace parents and peers as a leading influence.
