Joseph E. Jacoby (Professor) received his bachelor's degree from Northern Michigan University, and his Ph.D. in sociology
from the University of Pennsylvania in 1976. He has been a member of the Department of Sociology at Bowling Green State University
since 1981. He teaches undergraduate courses in principles of sociology and corrections, and graduate courses in corrections,
sociology of law, and sociology of mental illness. Prof. Jacoby's primary research interests focus on the intersection of
law and mental health. He has conducted studies of mentally ill people who had been imprisoned, and an historical analysis
of an institution for mentally ill offenders. He is currently collaborating with a team of researchers from several universities
to create a conceptual model of the reentry process experienced by mentally ill offenders released from prison. Prof. Jacoby's
other, current research projects involve analysis of publicity, public opinion, and public knowledge about the death penalty,
and the growth and geographic distribution of prisons.
