Gary R. Lee (Professor and Chair) received his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Minnesota in 1973. Prior to coming
to Bowling Green State University in 1996, Dr. Lee was on the faculties of Washington State University and the University
of Florida . His areas of expertise include family sociology and the sociology of aging. He has also worked extensively in
the area of comparative sociology with a particular focus on family structure and historical variations in family forms. Much
of his work involves the marital and family relations of older persons, with recent projects focusing on the antecedents of
coresidence between aging parents and their adult children, and the differential psychological consequences of widowhood for
men and women. His previous research has been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute
on Aging. Currently he is working on a study of the potential for and consequences of marriage among young adults according
to race and socio-economic status; and, with Susan Brown, a study of cohabitation among older persons.
