The Department of Romance and Classical Studies at Bowling Green State University offers an innovative Master of Arts degree in Spanish which combines the cultural and linguistic benefits of study abroad with the guidance and academic support of our graduate faculty at BGSU. Our program offers students a unique opportunity to pursue graduate study in Spain or Mexico, and on the campus of BGSU over a two-year period. At BGSU, we feel foreign residence and study are so important that we make it possible for our graduate students to spend the ENTIRE first year of our two-year program in Spain or Mexico.

First Year , students study in Spain or México:

Spain    Escuela Universitaria de Magisterio Cardenal Cisneros    http://www.uah.es/

Our larger first-year program is located in the city of Alcalá de Henares, Spain. Students attend the Escuela Universitaria de Magisterio Cardenal Cisnernos, Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, an innovative, historically rich institution founded in the late fifteenth century. Besides being a growing center of culture and activity, Alcalá is also within easy reach by commuter train or bus to Spain´s capital of Madrid. Graduate students may choose to live with a host family or in a Residencia Estudiantil, or may arrange their own housing. Our undergraduate program organizes special excursions several times each semester to places of cultural importance throughout the country. Graduate students may join these excursions upon payment of an excursion fee.

All classes are taught in Spanish by regular UAH university faculty. In addition, all graduate students take at least TWO classes each semester with their Spanish peers. Some of the courses available during the first year in Spain may include but are not limited to:

*SPAN 5500 Advanced Grammar and Composition
*SPAN 5630 Career Spanish (a "business" Spanish class)
*SPAN 5800 Contemporary Spanish Literature
*SPAN 6200 Contemporary Spanish Civilization
*SPAN 6820 Spanish American Literature
*SPAN 6820 Golden Age Literature
*SPAN 6820 20th Century Spanish Literature
*SPAN 6860 Spanish & Spanish American History
*SPAN 6860 General Linguistics
*SPAN 6860 Modern History
*SPAN 6980 Readings For Comprehensive Examination

As an alternative to the graduate program in Spain, the Department of Romance and Classical Studies sponsors a program in Mexico. Students admitted into the program must be self-reliant. They may be aided in registration by the Universidad Vercruzana (UV), by a member of the BGSU graduate faculty, but will be left entirely on their own for the remainder of the year. All courses are taught in Spanish by Mexican university faculty. Xalapa is the capital of the state of Veracruz with a population of approximately 500,000. The UV has almost 58,000 students, 43,000 of whom are pursuing undergraduate degrees (based on 2002-03 enrollments).

México   Universidad Vercruzana    http://www.uv.mx/englishuv/int_education/eee/about/about.htm

* The program in Mexico offers these special features for all graduate students:
* The opportunity to attend a very wide variety of classes with Mexican students at the Universidad Veracruzana.
* Exposure to the cultural and artistic climate of the Xalapa area through lectures, theatrical and musical performances, attendance at museums, etc.
* Housing in Xalapa is entirely the students' responsibility. A variety of lodging is available at all levels of comfort.

Second-Year , students complete their studies on the home campus in Bowling Green, Ohio

Graduate students in good standing return to the BGSU campus for their second year of study. Students with assistantships teach beginning and intermediate-level language classes while completing their graduate studies. Course offerings provide the opportunity to investigate topics in Spanish and Spanish American literature, culture, linguistics, pedagogy, film studies, and the role of Hispanics in the U.S. Our teaching and testing program is proficiency-based. A masters degree from BGSU ensures that the recipient has attained a very high level of proficiency in language, culture, and literature.
