Study Abroad in Xalapa, Veracruz
|
Xalapa is the capital of the state of Veracruz with a population of approximately 500,000. It is home to the University of
Veracruz (UV). The UV has almost 58,000 students, 43,000 of which are pursuing undergraduate degrees (based on 2002-03 enrollments).
Not only a “college town”,
Xalapa is known for its tropical climate, Caribbean influence and its palpable indigenous past. The region is celebrated for
its locally grown coffee and the jalapeño pepper. Local or nearby excursions include the anthropology museum (considered one
of the best in the country), an ecological park, Santa Anna’s former colonial-era hacienda, and waterfalls where parts of
the movie Romancing the Stone were filmed.
Within two to four hours from Xalapa are the Tajín pyramids (one of Mexico’s most important archeological sites), the port
of Veracruz, and Mexico City. The UV is a public university and was founded in 1944.
BGSU is affiliated with the School for Foreign Students (EEE) which was founded in 1957 as the academic unit in the Area of
Humanities devoted to programs for international students.
