At BGSU, we feel foreign residence and study are so important that we make it possible for our graduate students to spend
the ENTIRE first year of our two-year program in Spain or Mexico.
|
Our larger first-year program is located in the city of Alcalá de Henares, Spain. Students attend the Escuela Universitaria
de Magisterio Cardenal Cisnernos, Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, an innovative, historically rich institution founded in the late
fifteenth century. Besides being a growing center of culture and activity, Alcalá is also within easy reach by commuter train
or bus to Spain´s capital of Madrid. Graduate students may choose to live with a host family or in a Residencia Estudiantil,
or may arrange their own housing. Our undergraduate program organizes special excursions several times each semester to places
of cultural importance throughout the country. Graduate students may join these excursions upon payment of an excursion fee.

All classes are taught in Spanish by regular UAH university faculty. In addition, all graduate students take at least TWO

As an alternative to the graduate program in Spain, the Department of Romance and Classical Studies sponsors a program in
Mexico. Students admitted into the program must be self-reliant. They may be aided in registration by the Universidad Vercruzana (UV), by a member of the BGSU graduate faculty, but will be left entirely on their own for the remainder of the year. All
courses are taught in Spanish by Mexican university faculty. Xalapa is the capital of the state of Veracruz with a population
of approximately 500,000. The UV has almost 58,000 students, 43,000 of whom are pursuing undergraduate degrees (based on 2002-03
enrollments).
|
The program in Mexico offers these special features for all graduate students:
| |
- The opportunity to attend a very wide variety of classes with Mexican students at the Universidad Veracruzana.
- Exposure to the cultural and artistic climate of the Xalapa area through lectures, theatrical and musical performances, attendance
at museums, etc.
- Housing in Xalapa is entirely the students' responsibility. A variety of lodging is available at all levels of comfort.
|
For both options of first-year study, a stipend is provided to cover most basic living expenses depending on individual needs
and lifestyles.
