La Comunidad is a living-learning residence hall created to encourage students in their Spanish communication outside the
classroom. The hall houses a bilingual resident advisor and up to fifty students. Located in Harshman-Chapman, the community promotes the use of Spanish by immersing the student in the Spanish language. Likewise, students are encouraged
to communicate only in Spanish with the other residents while on the floor. The hall has a main student lounge that contains
sofas, chairs and a television and is frequently used to watch programs or videos in Spanish. It also has a smaller lounge
with a table, magazines in Spanish, texts used in Spanish classes, a variety of books in Spanish, and compact discs which
students are able to borrow. This is where students are encouraged to eat, visit the tutor, or socialize. An adjoining room
to this lounge is equipped with several computers. Besides the communication practice that the student will be exposed to
from living on the floor and conversing with their neighbors in Spanish in everyday situations, it is the site of many cultural
activities as well. These cultural activities round out the student's experience with the language, employ its use and promote
further understanding of the language and the cultures that speak it. These activities sponsored by Club Español include those
such as Movie Night, charlas, and cooking demonstrations.
