Span 395: The Impact of Globalization in Mexico

| Span 395 is a 3-credit service-learning course that meets every Thursday during Spring semester. This course is designed for students
who want to explore Mexico’s unique cultural and economic concerns in today’s globalizing world and who are willing to go
all the way to Xalapa, Veracruz to explore those issues. This course is taught in English and is open to undergraduate students
of all majors and backgrounds.

We will spend the first half of the course:
- Contextualizing Mexico and US relations in history.
- Analyzing the debates about globalization from multiple US and Mexican perspectives
- Preparing for the kind of activities and experiences we can expect during Spring Break.
Spring Break will consist of:
- The trip to Xalapa, Veracruz
- Family stays with local families
- Community service with local organizations
- Informal interviewing with locals
- Keeping a journal to reflect on your experiences.

The last half of the course will allow us to:
- Absorb and analyze our Mexican experience
- Incorporate our first-hand knowledge into the debates about globalization
- Think more critically about how identities and interests are shaped in today’s world.
