Graduate Studies in Spanish: Master of Arts in Teaching
If you are a certified teacher with at least one year’s teaching experience, the M.A.T. is an option for you.
The M.A.T. degree is for individuals planning to continue a teaching career. The program is available only to individuals who hold a valid teaching certificate. The M.A.T. is designed to meet the needs of classroom teachers who:
- may not require the type of academic preparation currently provided in programs leading to the Master of Arts or Master of Science degrees in their teaching area;
- desire to pursue course work in a discipline in order to improve teaching proficiency;
- can profit from additional professional course work in pedagogy, curriculum development and educational foundations;
- want to update their knowledge and proficiency in the use of research as it relates to their teaching areas.
Applicants to the M.A.T. degree program must have had at least one year’s teaching experience and must hold a valid teaching certificate from the state in which they are teaching.
The M.A.T. degree requires candidates to:
- complete 21 to 27 semester hours in a major field. At least one of the courses in the major must be a seminar at the 600 level or above;
- complete 8 to 13 semester hours in professional education, including one course in pedagogy.
- complete 35 semester hours of acceptable graduate course work with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better;
- accumulate not more than seven semester hours for course work with grades less than “B”; and
- pass final capstone experience or experiences (e.g., written comprehensive examination, research paper, portfolio, academic equivalent).”

You can earn the M.A.T. on the same schedule as our M.A. students: 1st year abroad, 2nd year on campus. Alternatively, if you are a working teacher you can take courses leading to the M.A.T. on a “teacher friendly” schedule (see Graduate Studies: Part-Time Studies).
In either case the M.A.T. combines course work in professional education and in Spanish, for a total of 35 semester hours, as follows:
- Professional education: 8-13 semester hours. EDTL 6530, Qualitative Approaches to Classroom Inquiry, is required. Additional recommended courses: EDTL 7100: Curriculum and Instructional Design, EDTL 6110: The Curriculum, EDFI 6770: Contemporary Theory and Research in Classroom Learning. Nota bene: This list is subject to modification depending on changes in education curricula and courses. In addition, substitutions may be approved.
- Spanish: 21-27 semester hours at graduate level, most of which will be earned abroad and the remainder of which (at least 3) will be earned on campus. The “final capstone experience” mentioned in the Graduate Catalog (see above, last bulleted item in quote) is either the Final Project (Plan II) or the thesis (Plan I), for which students enroll in SPAN 6990 on campus.
Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree, a major in Spanish, and a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applicants with a minor in Spanish will be considered if they have spent sufficient time in a Spanish-speaking country. Heritage speakers & Native-speakers are also encouraged to apply. Please note that the MAT in Spanish does not offer a path to licensure, and is typically completed by those who already have teaching licensure or by those who are interested in pursuing their own alternate path to licensure.
