Graduate Studies in Spanish: Financial Aid

All students admitted for full-time study are eligible to receive a financial aid package for their year abroad plus one year on campus.

Spain
Students entering the program in fall 2012 will receive support through one or more sources:

  • full or partial tuition waiver (in 2012, full tuition cost $7,632)
  • full waiver of the non-resident fee, if applicable (in 2012, $5,490)
  • graduate assistant stipend for the academic year (in 2012 for first year of program, up to $5,000)

*All graduate students at BGSU are required to pay the General Fees themselves (in 2012, $1,026).

For Graduate Assistants, the contract can range from .17 - .38 time. This will commit the GA’s to a maximum of 15 hours/week of duties. During the second year on campus, the assistantship can be increased up to .5 time.

Students must pay for transportation to and from Spain, food while in Spain and incidental purchases such as entertainment and books.

Most of our grads opt to live with a host family in Alcalá or find alternate accommodations and roommates on their own. If you choose to live with a host family, BGSU will make these arrangements for you. Please contact Nora Solomon for additional information.

If you opt to find your own housing, we recommend you arrive on site early in order to find suitable housing.

Mexico
Students entering the program are eligible to receive the following:

  • partial tuition and fee scholarships for BGSU and la Universidad Veracruzana
  • a partial or full waiver of the non-resident fee, if applicable
  • a graduate assistant stipend for the academic year (in 2012: $3,000)

As Graduate Assistants, your contract will range from .17 - .38 time, depending on your duties. This will commit you to a maximum of 15 hours/week of duties.

In addition to housing expenses, students must pay for transportation to and from Xalapa, food while in Xalapa and incidental purchases such as entertainment and books.

Please note: The information for Mexico is subject to change. It is provided as an approximate indication and will be updated as soon as we have definitive information.

BGSU (second year)
The funding package will include:

  • full or partial tuition waiver (in 2012, full tuition cost: $7,632)
  • full or partial waiver of the non-resident fee, if applicable (in 2012, $5,490)
  • a graduate assistantship (up to $9000)

Graduate Assistantships are normally .5-time (20 hours/week). Graduate Assistants typically serve as Teaching Assistants and teach one beginning Spanish course per semester. The teaching assistantships are competitive (the number of these positions vary from year to year depending on teaching needs).

Graduate students finishing the first year (abroad) in good standing normally receive a .5-time assistantship for the second year and are expected to return to the BGSU campus to complete their degree.

Please note: Upon being admitted to the BGSU Spanish MA program, you will receive a BGSU email account. You will be able to access the MyBGSU website, using your userid and email password. Select Blackboard → Community → ROCS Spanish Grads. Here you will find more detailed information about the program. You are, of course, also invited to contact the Spanish Graduate Coordinator.
