 Calendar  |  Program Costs |  Financial Aid |    Application

All students admitted for full-time study receive a financial aid package for their year abroad plus one year on campus.

In  Tours, the funding package covers:
*  tuition
* the University general fee
* the non-resident fee, if applicable
* housing in a private room in a suite at  the Technopôle, a student residence hall
(or the equivalent amount of money to be put toward student-arranged accommodations).

In addition, applicants whose files are complete by February 15th are automatically considered for one of our Special Board Expense Account awards of $2000, which are granted to the four top applicants whose files are complete by the deadline.

Students must pay transportation to and from France, a $500 deposit (due May 15 and refundable, to the student, in euros, after arrival in Tours), food while in France, incidental expenses such as entertainment and books.

Students who opt to find their own housing, as well as those who do not commit to BGSU housing by May 15th, do not pay a deposit.  They receive a housing allowance equal to the cost of housing at the Technopôle residence hall and are responsible for any additional housing expenses.  We recommend that these students arrive in Tours no later than September 1st in order to find their housing.

In Quebec, the funding package covers:
• tuition at Université  Laval
• housing in a private room in a student residence hall
• partial board (approximately 75% of the cost of a meal plan in the dorm for lunch and dinner)

Students must pay for their transportation to and from Quebec City, partial board, a $30 non-refundable application fee, a university general fee of approximately $1250/year, a $500 program fee, and incidental expenses including entertainment, books, etc.

As graduate assistants at Laval, first year students also prepare a handbook for the following year’s students.

On campus at BGSU the funding package covers:
• tuition and fees
• a graduate assistantship.

Most assistantships are 3/8 time and pay a stipend of approximately $6300; others are ¼ time, with a stipend of approximately $4200.  Assistants are either Teaching Assistants or Research Assistants
Teaching Assistants teach one elementary French course per semester, while Research Assistants assist the faculty with research and/or administrative duties (such as study abroad or the French House).   The teaching assistantships are highly competitive.

Decisions about what type of assistantship students will receive are made in the spring of the first year and determinations are based on first-year grades, language abilities, and departmental needs.

First-year graduate students in good standing normally receive an assistantship for the second year and are expected to return to the BGSU campus to complete their degree.

Additional Financial Aid for Tours:
*Students going to Tours whose applications are complete by February 15th will automatically be considered for one of our four merit-based Comptes-Couvert.
*These are Special Board Expense Accounts (SBEA) in the amount of $2000 each to be used for food expenses in Tours.  Recipients of a SBEA will receive the $2000 in addition to all regular financial aid.
*Students receiving an SBEA are required to remain in good academic standing as defined by the Graduate Catalog.  Any student on academic probation after the fall semester will receive no further SBEA payments.  Students receiving an SBEA are required to inform the graduate coordinator of their decision to accept the award by April 15th.

Summer tuition waivers: Graduate assistants are eligible for summer tuition waivers, which may be applied to summer study abroad programs, including Burkina Faso, France, Italy, and Spain.
