Graduate French Studies - Financial Aid

Calendar | Financial Aid | Application Packet

All students admitted for full-time study receive a financial aid package for their year abroad plus one year on campus.

In Tours
Students entering the program in fall 2012 will receive support through one or more sources:

  • full or partial tuition waiver (in 2011, full tuition cost $ 7,632) and/or
  • full waiver of the non-resident fee, if applicable (in 2011, $5,490)
  • graduate assistant stipend for the academic year (in 2011 for first year of program, up to $5,000

All graduate students at BGSU are required to pay the General Fees themselves (in 2011, $1,026).

For Graduate Assistants, the contract is considered to be .38 time. This will commit the GA’s to a maximum of 15 hours/week of duties. During the second year on campus, the assistantship can be increased up to .5 time.

Students must pay for transportation to and from France, food while in France and incidental purchases such as entertainment and books.

Most of our grads opt for housing in a private room in a suite at the Technopôle, or a room in one of the other CROUS-affiliated student residences (first two options only available to students under the age of 29) or in a host family in Tours. If you choose one of these options, (a) BGSU will make the arrangements and (b) you’ll be required to pay a non-refundable $500 deposit, due May 15.

If you opt to find your own housing or do not commit to housing at the Technopôle by May 15th, you will not be required to pay a deposit. We recommend in this case that you arrive on site early in order to find suitable housing.

Students interested in arranging housing on their own might find the following links useful:

Please note: {Currently Under Revision} This information for Quebec is subject to change. It is provided as an approximate indication and will be updated as soon as we have definitive information.

In Quebec
Students entering the program in fall 2012 will receive the following:

  • partial tuition and fee scholarships for BGSU and University Laval
  • a full waiver of the non-resident fee, if applicable
  • a graduate assistant stipend for the academic year (in 2011: $5,000)

As Graduate Assistants, your contract is considered to be .38-time. This will commit you to a maximum of 15 hours/week of duties, a major part of which will consist of preparing a handbook for the following year’s students.

In addition to housing expenses, students must pay for transportation to and from Quebec City, food while in Quebec and incidental purchases such as entertainment and books.

Most of our grads opt for housing in a private non-refundable room in a student residence hall. If this is the option you choose, you’ll be required to pay a $500 deposit, due April 1. If you opt to find your own housing or do not commit to housing in a dorm by April 1, you won’t be required to pay a deposit. We recommend in this case that you arrive on site early in order to find suitable housing.

On campus (second year)
The funding package will include:

  • full or partial tuition waiver (in 2011, full tuition cost: $7,632) and/or
  • full waiver of the non-resident fee, if applicable (in 2011, $5,490);
  • a graduate assistantship (up to $9000)

Graduate Assistantships are normally .5-time (20 hours/week). Graduate Assistants are either Teaching Assistants or Research Assistants. Teaching Assistants teach one beginning French course per semester, while Research Assistants assist the faculty with research and/or administrative duties such as study abroad or the French House. The teaching assistantships are competitive (the number of these positions varying from year to year depending on teaching needs). Decisions about what type of graduate assistantship students will receive (teaching or research) are made during orientation week in August.

Graduate students finishing the first year (abroad) in good standing normally receive a .5-time assistantship for the second year and are expected to return to the BGSU campus to complete their degree.

N.B. Upon being admitted to the BGSU French MA program, you will receive a BGSU email account. You will be able to access the MyBGSU website, using your userid and email password. Select BlackboardCommunity (a tab) → ROCS French Grads. Here you will find more detailed information about the program. You are, of course, also invited to contact the French Graduate Coordinator at ma-french@bgsu.edu.
