FRENCH HOUSE
2005-2006 Highlights: Weekly Cultural Activities
| "Did someone say FROMAGE?" On October 13th, Residents of La Maison Française partook in the tasting of a few of France's 400 + Cheeses. Each resident recounted the origin of one cheese and we were all able to then taste it. Interestingly, as we went through the cheeses, we ended up covering a majority of the map of France. " Atelier de Crêpe " / "Crêpe Workshop" What is the history of the crêpe? On October 17th, we not only learned about the origin of the crêpe, but learned how to make them! And of course we had a few samples!! Noël en France / Christmas in France On December 5th, we shared stories, songs and trivia about Christmas in France. We also had a farewell celebration for our two residents from Nantes, Aurélie Meyrier and Elise Roth. Elles vont nous manquer! (We are going to miss them!) Le Président, François Mitterrand On February 2nd, we commemorated one of the most honored Presidents of France by discussing his international and domestic achievements. La Recherche On March 23rd and April 13th, we were pleased to have M.A. students in French present their research for their final projects. Our guests and the title of their presentations were: Jennifer McCoy, "Isma: La problématique du pouvoir dans Ombre sultane d'Assia Djebar"; Robert Webster, "La poésie québécoise du 20ème siècle: Nelligan, Miron et le mythe"; Bradley Gosche, "André Gide et l'écriture homosexuelle: vers une Nouvelle Compréhension"; and Nathan Sebold, "Bataille's Sovereign Subject." La Négritude On April 20th, we discussed one of the founders of the concept of Negritude, Aimé Césaire. |
