Your Students' Participation in the
Psychology Research Subject Pool
Information and Brief Questionnaire for the Upcoming Term

The department has a practice of asking instructors--especially for Psyc 101, but for other courses as well--to encourage their students to participate in the subject pool either by:

(a) providing extra credit for each 1/2 hour of participation, while offering alternative means of extra credit to students who do not wish to be research subjects, or

(b) requiring students to complete a certain number of hours as a research participant, with a penalty for non-participation rather than credit for participation (again, with an alternative option for students who do not wish to be research subjects).

Instructors vary with respect to the number of hours students are asked to contribute. Four hours seems to be typical. In addition, many instructors teaching Psyc courses other than Psyc 101 find it appropriate to have their students participate in the subject pool.

IMPORTANT.
If your students will participate in the subject pool . . .

  • This brief (two-slide) PowerPoint may be used as an in-class introduction and/or paper handout for your students.
  • If you decide to put an Experimetrix link on your Blackboard site, please configure it to open in a new window rather than as a frame within Blackboard. Experimetrix won't work properly from within a frame.
  • Ask your students to register in Experimetrix by the end of the first week of classes.
  • Inform them that their research credit may not count unless they both register and make a course selection in Experimetrix (this is explained on the Experimetrix web site).

  • On permiting researchers to come to your class to arrange research appointments:

    • If you let researchers come to your class to sign-up research participants, rather than  having participants go through Experimetrix, there is a risk that some students' research credits may not be properly recorded. This is becuase students who have never had to make an appointment through Experimetrix may neglect to register in Experimetrix. To ensure that  your students register, you might consider having an assignment (at the end of the 1st week) that requires them to hand in a printout of the Experimetrix login page that shows their current accumulated credits.

    • As the term comes to a close, remind your students that the last day to participate in research is Friday (5 pm) of the last day of classes, and that they must assign all of their credits (to courses they've selected) by the following Saturday at 11:59 pm.
  • Note that for any given term:

    • The  deadline for reserchers to enter students' research credits into the system is is 5:00 pm on Friday of the last day of classes, prior to final exams (students themselves have until the following day (Saturday at 11:59 pm) to assign all of their credits to their selected courses.

    • Instructors will be emailed a report  on the Monday following the last day of classes, detailing their students' participation.
