DESCRIPTION:
On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the debut of Superman , the Center for Popular Culture Studies in the Department of Popular Culture at Bowling Green State University is hosting a conference, “The Comic Book in Popular Culture,” on October 24-25, 2008, and a K-16 educators’ workshop, ”The Comic Book in the Classroom,” on October 25, 2008. The Comic Book in the Classroom Workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Michael Bitz, founding director of the Comic Book Project and on the faculty of the Teachers College at Columbia University in New York. The Comic Book Project is an arts-based literacy and learning initiative hosted by the nonprofit Center for Educational Pathways with materials published by Dark Horse Comics. The goal of the project is to help children and youth forge an alternative pathway to literacy by writing, designing, and publishing original comic books on a designated theme such as Leadership, Community Awareness, The Environment, and Conflict Resolution.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION:
The Comic Book in the Classroom Workshop is free and open to all K-16 educators but registration is required. The workshop will include a free continental breakfast and workshop materials.
