AREA ANNOUNCEMENT BLACK MUSIC CULTURE AREA AT THE 2006 POPULAR CULTURE ASSOCIATION AND AMERICAN CULTURE ASSOCIATION MEETINGS

April 9, 2006—The Black Music Culture Area, a new area within the Popular Culture Association and American Culture Association,
is co-chaired by Dr. William C. Banfield, Professor of Africana Studies and Music and Society at the Berklee College of Music
and Dr. Angela M. Nelson, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Popular Culture at Bowling Green State University.
Inaugural presentations will coincide with the 2006 Popular Culture Association and American Culture Association Annual Conference
held April 12-15, 2006 (Wednesday through Saturday), at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Black Music Culture Area received 45 paper, abstract, and panel submissions. 33 papers divided into 12 panels will be
presented. Presenters will come from 27 American and international colleges and universities: Bentley College, Berklee College
of Music, Bowling Green State University, Chicago State University, City University of New York, East Carolina University,
Emory University, George Mason University, Hamilton College, High Point University, Indiana University, Loras College, Morehouse
College, New York University, Princeton University, St. Augustine’s College, Savannah State University, Tarleton State University,
Texas Tech University, University of Alabama, University of Georgia, University of Maryland, University of Minnesota, University
of St. Thomas, University of Windsor, Whitmore College, and Zayed University.
Sub-themes featured in this year’s Black Music Culture Area are Contemporary Concert Music, Hip-Hop, Jazz and Blues, Musical
Explorations, Philosophy and Practice, and Popular and Contemporary. Five panel sessions including an undergraduate student
panel will focus on hip-hop music culture.
