1. Regular Membership. [See 2004 revision below] Persons being (re)nominated for regular membership on the Graduate Faculty
of the Department of Philosophy should have the following qualifications and supporting evidence should be presented with
each (re)nomination.
a. The faculty member should hold the doctorate (or its equivalent).
b. The faculty member must show evidence of a continuous record of productive scholarship. The nature of this work may vary
considerably, but as a minimum the faculty member must have the equivalent of three refereed journal articles in the most
recent six year period and be engaged in scholarly research within the most recent three year period. Evidence of scholarly
research will involve one or more of the following:
(a) Publication of professional articles, books, or monographs (b) Presentation of paper(s) at professional meetings (c) Completed research submitted but not yet accepted under (a) or (b) (d) Research related activities such as making philosophically pertinent videotapes, editing philosophical journals, etc.
c. The faculty member must demonstrate active and productive participation in the instruction of graduate students. This may
include activities such as graduate teaching, thesis or dissertation guidance, program planning and course development, and
advising of graduate students.
2. Provisional Membership. Faculty members who do not meet all of the qualifications for regular membership (but do possess
the Doctorate or its equivalent) may be appointed as provisional members for a period of three to five years. Provisional
status allows the faculty member to participate in all facets of graduate education. It is expected that the period of provisional
membership will allow a faculty member to acquire the necessary credentials for full membership.
3. Ad hoc Membership. Faculty who do not meet the requirements specified for provisional or regular membership may be considered
for an ad hoc appointment. These appointments are limited to specific graduate assignments for which the faculty members have
special competencies.
4. Review of Qualifications. In order to keep the Graduate Faculty a viable body, the qualifications of members will be reviewed
every three to five years. Those not qualifying for continued membership under the criteria set forth above will have their
membership terminated unless cause is shown.
